Tri-County Concerts History
In 1941, chamber music in the Philadelphia suburbs received a remarkable boost from Ellen Winsor and Rebecca Winsor Evans, when the two sisters decided to sponsor the original Curtis String Quartet in a free public concert at Radnor Junior High School. The musicians were enthusiastically received and Tri-County Concerts Association (TCCA) was successfully launched. Two years later the fledgling organization held its first Youth Concert and assumed a vital position in the area's cultural life.
The president, Mrs. Guida Smith served from the early 1950's to the late 1970's and all energies were to bring in top musical artists to the community, as well as relatively unknown artists who later became internationally renowned. In 1979 Ms. Jean Wetherilll assumed leadership of the Association. During that time the Association became a nonprofit corporation. After several local relocations in 1992 and to the present time, Eastern University has been the home for TCCA Sunday afternoon concerts.
A partial list of performers who have been presented by TCCA is William Kapell, Paul Babura-Skoda, Eugene Isthmian, the Budapest String Quartet, Marian Anderson, Anna Moffo, Juilliard String Quartet, Leontyne Price, Gil Shaham, Pamela Frank, Eric Owens, Mimi Stillman and Matthew Bengtson. Many of these artists have shown appreciation for the early support given by TTCA by returning years later to perform again to the Tri-County community audiences.
In recent years the Association has focused on "Emerging Artists" selected by a professional artist selection committee. The goal of TCCA is to provide exposure at all concerts and to pay a modest stipend to the artists who need the assistance at this crucial time in their career. At the same time audiences have the opportunity to see and hear tomorrow's stars at affordable prices.
Mission
The mission of Tri-County Concerts Association (TCCA) for over sixty years has been to serve the Chester, Delaware and Montgomery County communities by fostering the performance and appreciation of high quality solo and ensemble chamber music. It is the only chamber music series in the area run by an independent community board. Tri-County Concerts is unique in presenting recitals by emerging profession artists and by promising local youths. Ticket prices are kept low to enable families to have a rich cultural experience.
